28 Feb Upcoming Water Referendum: What’s at Stake for Our Community
Water is a public good, not a commodity—but this May, Pittsburgh voters will decide whether to protect public control of our water system or risk privatization.
On May 2025 Primary Election Day, Pittsburgh residents will vote on a referendum to amend the city’s Home Rule Charter, ensuring that our water and sewer systems cannot be sold or leased to private corporations. The Pittsburgh City Council unanimously approved putting this question on the ballot, and now it’s up to us to make our voices heard.
Why This Matters
If privatized, Pittsburgh’s water could fall into the hands of profit-driven corporations, leading to:
Higher rates for residents
Reduced transparency and accountability
Worsening service and lack of community oversight
A direct threat to water affordability and equity for vulnerable communities
We’ve seen cities across the country suffer the consequences of water privatization. This is our chance to ensure Pittsburgh’s water remains publicly owned and community-controlled—now and for future generations.
What’s Next?
Our Water Table (OWT), Pittsburgh United, and local organizers—including Environmental Justice Table (EJT) leads Joanne Tippett, Advocacy Coordinator and Chief Pomaj, Advocacy Consultant—are mobilizing to educate, engage, and activate Pittsburgh residents ahead of this crucial vote.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing:
- Educational resources on what privatization could mean for our city
- Community events to discuss the referendum and what’s at stake
- Ways to take action and ensure every Pittsburgh voter understands the importance of this vote
Then, on World Water Day on March 22, we’ll dive deeper into what’s at stake, how this fits into broader water justice efforts, and how you can help protect Pittsburgh’s water future. So stay tuned!
This is our moment to stand up for safe, affordable, and publicly owned water. Stay informed, get involved, and let’s make sure Pittsburgh’s water stays in the hands of the people.
