Sankofa Garden Art Unveiling at the Dornbush Rain Garden

Join us for the official unveiling of Sankofa Garden: Roots to a Brighter Future by Pittsburgh-area artist Marlana Adele Vassar! This lavish and intricate sculptural relief now lives in UpstreamPgh’s Dornbush Rain Garden, and was inspired by the garden and the cultural identity of East Hills.

From Ms. Vassar, “The design incorporates a colorful, stylized version of a Sankofa bird coming to life, paired with elder and younger tortoise characters. The Sankofa bird represents learning from our past. The bird is shown crowning the wise tortoise, acknowledging the contributions of our elders, while the younger tortoise admires and respectfully learns from their ancestor.”

We’ll have free food, drinks, and music from 1-4pm, and the ribbon cutting ceremony at 2pm, featuring Ms. Vassar and local speakers reflecting on the Sankofa Garden: Roots to a Brighter Future. Please RSVP so we can get a headcount.

We’re looking forward to celebrating community, culture, and climate justice!

This project was funded by Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, and was completed in partnership with Shiftworks Community + Public Arts and the East Hills Consensus Group.

The event is finished.
