YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh Rain Gardens

The Homewood YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh issued an RFQ for a team to construct green stormwater infrastructure at their Homewood/Brushton facility to deal with flooding issues occurring in the parking lot.

In partnership with Ethos Collaborative, UpstreamPgh designed and oversaw the installation of two rain gardens at the YWCA of Pittsburgh’s Homewood/Brushton facility. Our team directed a crew of local high school students (Operation Better Block’s Junior Green Corp) to help design the garden, particularly in choosing appropriate plant species and garden shapes. We led a design charrette with the students so they could influence layout and plant selection.

The two gardens combined have the ability to capture 11,800 gallons of stormwater. The rear rain garden captures 40% of the building, while the front rain garden captures approximately 0.7 acres of impervious surface runoff from the parking lot.
