Shade Tree Committees
Borough Shade Tree Committees are established by local governments to help oversee public trees in a municipality. Ranging in size from four to seven members of the pubic, these committees work with borough managers, councils and/or staff.
Committees serve different functions in different communities ranging from organizing events and activities, such as tree planting and care, to developing programs and initiatives that will help protect street trees. All committees work periodically to update municipal codes to reflect the needs of the urban forest.
In our watershed, UpstreamPgh provides advice to the shade tree committees in Wilkinsburg, Edgewood, and Swissvale. We offer support and guidance for planting and tree care, grant applications, and policies on urban forest and street trees. Additionally, we connect these committees with interested volunteers.
