Rooted in Wilkinsburg – 500 Tree Initiative
The Rooted in Wilkinsburg – 500 Tree Initiative began in the fall of 2011 as a two-year initiative to plant 500+ trees in Wilkinsburg Borough in order to reduce stormwater runoff and reduce non point-source pollution from entering Nine Mile Run. Over the two-year period, more than 400 volunteers attended 29 events and contributed 1,300 hours of service.
Trees were planted in the business district, residential neighborhoods, parks and on school campuses. These trees continue to provide considerable benefits to the borough, including stormwater reduction, clean air and shade and beauty throughout the community.
The 2012-2013 project helped replace 6,000 square feet of impervious surface with permeable tree pits and trees which intercept and divert thousands of gallons from storm sewers each year.
